What it does

Price in the menu bar

The current slot's price, updated as the quarter hours roll by. Cents, currency or plain number, with an optional trend arrow, level word and the next slot's price.

Today and tomorrow

A chart of all 96 quarter-hour slots, colored by Tibber's price level. Hover or drag to read any slot; tomorrow appears as soon as Tibber publishes it.

Cheapest window

Finds the cheapest 1 to 6 hour window ahead of you, shades it in the chart and can remind you ten minutes before it starts.

Live power from Pulse

If your home has a Tibber Pulse, the popover shows the current draw, today's usage and cost, live. Solar homes see export to the grid. Optionally in the menu bar too.

Notifications

Tomorrow's prices are in, a cheap window is about to start, or the price crossed a threshold you set.

Light on resources

Prices are fetched a few times a day and cached. No background daemon, no accounts, no tracking. Updates itself when a new version is out.

Available in English, Dutch, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, French, Spanish and Italian. The app follows your macOS language.

Install

Download the zip, double-click it, and drag Tibber Menu Bar into your Applications folder.
Open it once. macOS will say it could not verify the app: click Done.
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security, and click Open Anyway next to the message about Tibber Menu Bar. Confirm with Open.
A bolt appears in the menu bar. Click it, then Open Settings… and paste your Tibber token (see below).

Why the warning?

The app is signed, but not notarized by Apple, because notarization needs a paid Apple Developer membership. The source code is public and you can build it yourself. On macOS 14 and earlier, right-click the app and choose Open instead of the System Settings step.

Get a Tibber token

Sign in at developer.tibber.com → Settings → Access Token with your Tibber account.
Create a personal access token and copy it with the copy button.
In Tibber Menu Bar, open Settings, paste the token and click Connect. If you have several homes, pick one.

The token only reads your own account. Tibber Pulse is optional: without it the app still shows prices, the chart, the planner and notifications.

Privacy

Your token is stored in the macOS Keychain and is only ever sent to Tibber: api.tibber.com for prices and websocket-api.tibber.com for the live stream.
The app talks to Tibber's API, and once a day to this site to see whether a new version exists. No analytics, no crash reporting.
Prices are cached on your Mac so the menu bar fills instantly after launch.

Questions

Which macOS versions?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon and Intel.

Does the price include taxes?

It is Tibber's total price per kWh for your home: energy plus taxes and surcharges, the same number the Tibber app shows.

How do I update?

The app checks once a day and offers new versions itself, signed and verified before they are installed. You can also check from Settings → General → Check for Updates…. Homebrew users can keep using brew upgrade.

How do I uninstall?

Quit the app from the popover and move it to the Trash. Remove the token in Settings first if you want it gone from the Keychain.

Is this an official Tibber app?

No. Tibber Menu Bar is an independent, open-source project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tibber. It uses Tibber's public developer API.
